פרשת ויצא תשע"ב

("ויחלם...והנה מלאכי אלקים..." (כח:יב) "ויאמר יעקב כאשר ראם..." (לב:ג)

At the beginning of the סדרה we are told that יעקב saw the מלאכים going up and down the ladder in a dream. At the end of the סדרה 20 years later, on his return to ארץ ישראל the תורה tells us that יעקב saw the מלאכים accompany him back to ארץ ישראל. Why originally did יעקב only see the מלאכים in a dream, but now he was זוכה to see them in person. If anything it should have been the opposite! Surely, when יעקב was in א"י and even lying on the מקום of the קדש הקדשים, it is much more מסוגל for the מלאכים to appear physically, rather than now when he is in חוץ לארץ?

Even though יעקב was on the מקום of the קדש הקדשים he was on his way to חרן and his מחשבות were racing around his head trying to imagine surviving in a foreign land. Therefore the מלאכים only appeared to him in a dream. But, on the borders of א"י, on the verge to stepping back into the קדושה – then his מחשבות were already on קדושה ענינים. He was therefore זוכה to actually meet the מלאכים personally

. With this, ר' זלמן סורוצקין says we can understand another problem. Why on the night of כל נדרי, after having spent the whole day eating and we are full up and far away from feeling any קדושה do we shout out ברוך שם כבוד וכו' like מלאכים? Yet, after spending 25 hours, completely immersed in our תפילות and abstaining from any food, and tasting a bit of what it is like to be like a מלאך, do we then only say ברוך שם כבוד וכו' in מעריב on מוצאי יוה"כ quietly? We can now say, that although we are full before יוה"כ, our מחשבות are focused on the day ahead and the intensity of the עבודה we hope to reach puts us on the level of מלאכים and we can therefore say ברוך שם כבוד וכו' loudly – like מלאכים. But, even after spending a whole day בתענית ובתפילה, as soon as we start מעריב, our מחשבות quickly revert back to our bodily needs, anticipating a good meal to break our fasts on and therefore we say ברוך שם כבוד וכו' quietly – like people.

From this we can learn, being in the right place does not help you if your mind is elsewhere and it does not matter where a person is currently holding, but rather where he is aiming to be. To be זוכה to see real greatness, then we must be heading in the right direction – with the correct מחשבות. גוט שבת
