Rashi Teaser – Haazinu

Devarim, 32:44

44And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song into the ears of the people he and Hoshea the son of Nun.

Q1: Why is Yehoshua mentioned together with Moshe in this verse?

Q2: According to Rashi, why is Yehoshua referred to by his original name, Hoshea, here, even though Moshe had previously in the Torah changed his name to Yehoshua?

A1: This speech occurred on the last day of Moshe’s life, and the leadership to Yehoshua was transferred during the day. Moshe handed authority to Yehoshua while he was still alive, so that people would not question the authority of Yehoshua as leader after Moshe had died.

A2: Despite the greatness bestowed on him, Yehoshua remained as humble as he was before his name was changed.

Other answers:

The Kli Yakar says that originally Moshe had enhanced his name as a prayer to save him from the influence of the other spies. Now that all that generation had died, this prayer was no longer relevant, and he reverted to being called Hoshea.

Ibn Ezra explains that the people still knew him as Hoshea; only the leaders were aware that Moshe had changed his name to Yehoshua.

Good Shabbos,

Daniel Caller
