Rashi Teaser - Ki Sisa

Ki Sisa 31:13

13"And you, speak to the children of Israel and say: 'Only keep My Sabbaths! For it is a sign between Me and you for your generations, to know that I, the Lord, make you holy.

Q1: What is the significance of the Torah’s commandment to keep Shabbos being placed immediately after all the Mishkan material?

Q2: In addition to the juxtaposition between the Mishkan and Shabbos, what indication is there in the Possuk that the two subjects are linked?

Q3: Why would I have thought that the building of the Mishkan would override the laws of Shabbos, which causes Rashi to emphasise that actually the laws of Shabbos override the Mishkan?

A1: Rashi: To teach that observing Shabbos overrides all work involved in building the Mishkan.

A2: The letter ‘vav’ – ‘and’ in ‘ve’atah’ – ‘and you’ is a connecting letter, and so here connects the mitzva of Shabbos with the mitzvos of the mishkan stated earlier.

A3: Rashi hints at this in his words: ‘although you will be eager and enthusiastic in the work of the Mishkan’ (underlined in the 2nd Rashi above). As Rashi holds that the Mishkan was atonement for the Golden Calf, one can imagine that Bnei Yisrael would have been eager to complete its construction as soon as possible. Through their zeal, there was a concern they might accidently break Shabbos. Therefore they needed to be cautioned that while their enthusiasm to build the Mishkan was admirable, the laws of Shabbos take precedence (Lubavicher Rebbe).
